Sports Programs - Softball
Take me out to the ball game! What is a summer in Canada without some softball? Special Olympics Peterborough has two softball teams - the Pirates and the Wolverines. Both teams practice on Thursday evenings, starting at 6:00 pm. Their seasons run from middle May until late August.

The Pirates practice weekly St.Aphonsus School (behind the Red Lobster). Athletes joining up for the Pirates should have basic throwing and catching skills, batting is an asset, but certainly not a requirement. There will be some light running as well. All athletes will need to have proper shoes, a softball glove, and a helmet for safe batting. Pirates coach is Perry Byrd, with assistance from Joan.

The Wolverines practice weekly at Rube Brady Park on Armour Road (the toboggan hill), starting at 6:00 pm and going until 8:00 pm. The Wolverines are a more competitive team, and registered athletes should have advanced skills in softball. Proper shoes, a softball glove, and a batting helmet are required. Wolverines coach is Mary Harran, and assisted by Jeff.

We usually attend at least one tournament each summer, hosted right here in Peterborough in the middle of July. We often have up to 10 teams registered, coming here from south central Ontario. It's a great day, with lunch provided, water, and some shelter to get out of the sun in between games.

Athletes will have an opportunity to register for the tournaments in advance, and will be required to pay a small fee to participate.

Both teams fill up pretty fast, so register early to guarantee a spot!
